What each field means:
Initial Investment — the lump sum you already have invested today (enter 0 if you’re starting from scratch)
Additional Monthly Investment — how much you plan to add every month
Expected Annual Return — the average annual return you expect from price/NAV appreciation only (dividends are entered separately below, to avoid double-counting)
Expected Annual Dividend Yield — the annual dividend rate, applied as a % of your portfolio balance in each period (added directly to your projected value — this calculator doesn’t assume dividends are automatically reinvested)
Investment Period — how many years you plan to keep investing

About the “Popular Dividend ETF” presets: researched from public sources (StockAnalysis, ETF.com, issuer fact sheets) as of July 2026 — these are static reference figures, not real-time data, and price return is separated from dividend yield so dividends aren’t counted twice. Some ETFs (JEPI, SCHD, DIVO) use a 5-year average instead of 3 years, since that window gave more reliable separated price/dividend data.

High-income, covered-call ETFs (JEPI, JEPQ, SPYI, QQQI, DIVO): these generally use a covered-call strategy to generate higher income, which typically comes with a trade-off of capped upside on the price side. QQQI doesn’t yet have a full 3-year track record, so figures reflect performance since inception instead.

Past performance doesn’t guarantee future results, and the last few years in particular saw U.S. equity markets run well above their long-term historical average. This calculator compounds monthly, so figures are estimates for early-stage planning only, not a promise of future returns.
A quick, honest disclaimer: I’m not a licensed financial advisor, and this calculator isn’t personalized investment advice. It’s a planning tool I use and believe in, but your situation is your own — for anything specific to your finances, it’s worth talking to a qualified professional. Investing involves risk, including the potential loss of principal, and past performance doesn’t guarantee future results.
